Work in a sheet metal fabrication plant during the COVID-19 virus outbreak

Operational precautions for the safety of manufacturing workers in the sheet metal fabrication factory

At the current situation, our primary and most important goal is to reduce the spread of the virus while protecting the health of our employees, but at the same time we want to ensure business stability and customer satisfaction. Removing this apparent contradiction required significant consideration, planning and consistent implementation on our part. The difficulty is that manufacturing is a type of work that does not allow you to work from home. In order to maintain continuous production, employees must continue to be present in the production plant on a daily basis. However, production plants have modern ERP systems, capacity management systems and other production softwares that can be well utilized and integrated together allow many non-specific production processes to be done from anywhere, even from home . These systems are also available for us, allowing rapid adaptation to the virus situation.

What steps have we taken at Melior to keep our business safe?

1, Possibility of working from home
As a first step, we assessed which colleagues can do their work from home with the help of the programs I mentioned above. We provided them with the IT back office system to be able to work from home. At the same time, we have also made it possible for our employees who, for whatever reason, are more vulnerable to health problems to work from home. Most of the office workers now work from home office.

To protect employees who are directly involved in manufacturing and continue to do their day-to-day work in our sheet metal processing plant, we have taken a few key prevention steps:
  • We try to limit the interactions between our employees as much as possible in order to maintain the right social distance.
  • In order to increase social distance, we have created a plan to significantly limit face-to-face meetings, replacing internal communication with text messaging and mobile phone conversations where possible.
  • For some office workers who are still working on site, we provide separate office space.
  • When it comes to workplace contact, we pay attention to keep a distance of at least 2m.
  • We provided all colleagues with face masks, acquired hand sanitizers and encouraged staff to use them.
  • We carry out frequent disinfection processes on the site.
  • We now avoid the usual face-to-face meetings in the purchasing and sales business.
  • The drivers of the freight carriers who come to us do not enter the building, they wait at the vehicles.
  • Where possible, we have simplified administration by moving to electronic documentation at several of our business partners.
  • For a period of time, we have suspended some services not necessary for the work (apple and cake ordering, massage)

However, not only the specific measures outlined above are important in the current situation, but also the clear, consistent communication of these steps by the company, by us.

We do hope that our production can continue to operate smoothly in the future, and we will continue to exercise the utmost care.
