Melior sheet metal parts in BME Formula Racing Team self-driving race car

In 2019, we continued our cooperation with the racing team of BME (Budapest University of Technology and Economics) university students. This time we assisted in the building of an electronic self-driving race car with our sheet metal fabrication expertise and experience manufacturing sheet metal parts for this project.
Our co-operation with BME FRT started in 2015, and since then we have been manufacturing sheet metal parts for the team's racing car which is a new model every year. With our support, we want to help them to be as successful as possible in the Formula Student competition, thus getting more and more reputation of Hungarian higher education.
For the 2019 season the team is making a convertible electric and self-driving car: FRED-001 alias MelodyBME FRT electric and self-driving racing car in 2019
We have manufactured sheet metal fabricated parts with laser cutting and bending which are built in different subassemblies in the race car now. The result of our partnership is presented by Balázs Nagy, a member of the team's quarter-car group:

"Thanks to Melior Laser, we can use high-quality sheet metal fabricated parts for our three major components this year. These include: brake- and steering actuator and the pedal box. In all three cases, the most main aspect was safety, so it was important for us to have impeccable quality components manufactured for our car.

1, Brake actuator unit The Melior sheet metal parts are built into the brakes actuator unit
One of the most important part of our self-driving racing car is the brake actuator, whose primary function is to brake the car (in driverless cases) and to stop the car in an emergency. A pneumatic system which is capable of operating at up to 10 bar. This unit  can be maintained at  working pressure by a compressor mounted on the car. The brake actuator is located at the back of our car.

2, Steering actuator unit  Melior sheet metal fabricated part built in the steering actuator unit
Just like in the case of a brake actuator, the steering actuator is also an important part of our driverless racing car. The steering actuator can control and steer in a self-guiding mode instead of the driver. Basically, this actuator is a set of mechanisms replacing the driver. Our steering actuator is located at the bottom of the car, where the forces required to turn the wheels are driven by a 200 watt electric motor.

3, Pedal box unit Melior sheet metal fabricated parts built into the pedal box unit
The last part is the pedal box unit, which includes all the pedals and the associated sensors. An interesting point to note that this year's pedal box is the lightest pedal box ever associated with BME Formula Racing Team. The pedal box has the greatest role in manual mode (when there is a driver in the car), as the driver's comfort is largely determined by the feedback from the pedals."

The sheet metal parts fabricated by Melior are made of aluminium, carbon steel and stainless steel with laser cutting and bending. On some parts, we lasermarked the team logo on request.

Let's cheer for the team, go go BME FRT!
